The SUMITOMO 16CDBAJ is a Polycrystalline Diamond (PCD) turning insert engineered for precision metal removal on non-ferrous workpiece materials. It features a 55-degree diamond insert shape with a 3/8-inch inscribed circle, a 1/64-inch corner radius, and a positive rake geometry that reduces cutting forces and promotes clean chip evacuation. The uncoated PCD cutting edge delivers exceptional hardness and edge retention on aluminum, copper, brass, and other non-ferrous alloys. This insert is installed by CNC machinists and tooling technicians in turning center applications where surface finish and dimensional accuracy are critical.
The 16CDBAJ is suited for finish and semi-finish turning operations on non-ferrous metals in both production and job-shop environments. It follows the ANSI code NFDCMX32.51 and the ISO code NF-DCMT11T304, making it compatible with standard toolholders designed for that geometry. The screw-clamping holding method provides secure, repeatable insert seating. This insert is appropriate for applications where carbide grades lack sufficient wear resistance against abrasive non-ferrous materials.
Designed for use in screw-clamp turning toolholders accepting NFDCMX32.51 (ANSI) or NF-DCMT11T304 (ISO) insert geometry. Intended for primary use on non-ferrous metal workpiece materials per material grade code N.
This insert is seated and secured by a toolholder screw; power down and lock out the machine spindle before indexing or replacing inserts. Use the correct torx or hex key as specified by the toolholder manufacturer to achieve proper clamping torque. PCD inserts are not suitable for ferrous materials and should not be used on steel, cast iron, or hardened workpieces, as this will cause rapid edge failure. Follow the machine tool manufacturer and toolholder manufacturer guidelines for feed rate and depth of cut recommendations.
