The SUMITOMO 166REQN is a Polycrystalline Cubic Boron Nitride (PCBN) turning insert designed for high-speed and interrupted cutting of hard, abrasive workpiece materials. Carrying the manufacturer grade BNC2020 with a PVD-applied TiN coating, this insert delivers consistent edge life when machining cast iron, hardened steel, and superalloys. It features an 80-degree diamond insert shape with a 0.5-inch inscribed circle, a 3/16-inch thickness, and a 1/32-inch corner radius. The neutral hand orientation suits a wide range of toolholder setups. This insert is installed by machinists and CNC tooling specialists in production turning applications.
The 166REQN belongs to the CNG series and conforms to ANSI code 2NCCNGA432 and ISO code 2NC-CNGA120408, making it straightforward to cross-reference against existing toolholder and insert inventories. It is suited for turning operations on cast iron components, hardened steel parts, and superalloy workpieces where conventional carbide inserts fall short. The negative rake geometry and chip breaker style A support stable, controlled chip formation under demanding cutting conditions. Typical applications include finishing and semi-finishing passes on hardened bores, journals, and flat faces in aerospace, automotive, and general heavy machining environments.
Designed for use in CNGA-style toolholders accepting a CNG series insert with a 0.5-inch inscribed circle, 3/16-inch thickness, and a 0.2031-inch hole diameter. Verify toolholder clamping method accepts both clamp and pin retention before installation.
This insert is installed by qualified machinists or CNC tooling technicians. Always power down and lock out the machine spindle before seating or removing any cutting insert. Confirm the toolholder pocket and clamping screw are free of chips and debris before securing the insert. Do not exceed the insert manufacturer's recommended cutting parameters for the workpiece material being machined.
