The SUMITOMO 166QEKG is a polycrystalline cubic boron nitride (PCBN) turning insert designed for high-precision machining of hardened ferrous materials. Manufactured to ANSI and ISO 13399 standards, it carries the ANSI insert code CNGA432 and ISO insert code CNGA120408. The insert features a PVD-applied TiCN coating that provides high wear resistance while maintaining toughness across a range of hardened steel applications. With an 80-degree diamond (rhombic) shape, negative rake geometry, and negative side clearance, this insert is built for stable, controlled cutting in demanding turning operations. It is installed and serviced by machinists and CNC tool setters working in precision metal-cutting environments.
This insert is suited for finish and semi-finish turning of hardened steels, classified under ISO workpiece material group H. Typical applications include hard turning operations on components such as bearing races, shafts, and tool steel parts where consistent surface finish and dimensional accuracy are required. The CNGA432 form factor fits standard negative-rake toolholders designed for that insert style. The BNC2010 grade designation indicates a formulation targeting high wear resistance with moderate toughness, making it appropriate for interrupted cuts in hardened material where edge security matters.
Designed as an OEM-style replacement or direct-fit insert for negative-rake CNGA-style toolholders accepting a 432 size code insert with a 1/2 inch inscribed circle and 0.2031 inch hole diameter, using clamp and pin holding methods.
This insert is installed by qualified machinists or CNC tool setters familiar with indexable insert tooling. Ensure the machine spindle is fully stopped and all drives are disabled before indexing or replacing the insert. Use the appropriate torque wrench and clamp hardware specified by the toolholder manufacturer when securing the insert. Inspect the toolholder pocket and seating surfaces for wear or debris before installing a new insert.
