The SUMITOMO 161NDJS is a Polycrystalline Cubic Boron Nitride (PCBN) turning insert designed for hard-material machining on CNC lathes and turning centers. Manufactured to ANSI code 2NUCNGA431 and ISO code 2NU-CNGA120404, this insert features an 80-degree diamond shape with a negative rake geometry and a 0-degree relief angle. The BN1000 grade PCBN substrate is uncoated and engineered for high-speed finishing and semi-finishing of hardened steels, cast irons, and other hard workpiece materials. With a 0.5-inch inscribed circle and a corner radius of 0.0156 inches (1/64 inch), it delivers tight tolerances in demanding turning applications. Machinists and CNC tool setters working in precision shops specify this insert for its dimensional consistency and insert-to-insert repeatability.
This insert is intended for turning operations on hard materials coded H, including hardened steels and hard cast irons, in both production and job-shop environments. It seats using a clamp and pin holding method in toolholders designed to accept CNGA-style inserts with a 0.203-inch hole diameter. Two cutting edges are available per insert. The chip breaker designation is A, and the insert meets both ANSI and ISO 13399 standards, making it compatible with standard CNGA toolholder systems used in precision turning cells.
Designed for use in CNGA-style toolholders with a clamp and pin clamping system. The 0.203-inch hole diameter and ANSI code 2NUCNGA431 conform to standard CNGA insert seating dimensions across compatible turning tool systems.
This insert is installed by qualified machinists or CNC tool setters following the toolholder manufacturer's clamping torque and seating procedures. Always index or replace inserts with the machine in a safe, stopped state and with the control in tool-change mode. Inspect the toolholder pocket for debris or wear before seating the insert, as contamination will affect runout and surface finish. Handle PCBN inserts with care — the cutting edges are brittle and can chip if dropped or impacted.
