The SUMITOMO 12HA712 is a solid carbide turning insert in the TPG322 geometry, designed for precision external turning operations on CNC and manual lathes. This insert features a dual-layer PVD coating of TiAlN and AlCrN under SUMITOMO's proprietary Super ZX coating designation, providing high heat resistance and wear performance during steel cutting applications. The triangular insert shape (60-degree included angle) with a positive rake and 11-degree relief angle reduces cutting forces and helps maintain edge integrity. It is intended for use by machinists and tool-and-die professionals performing finish and semi-finish turning.
The 12HA712 is suited for secondary workpiece materials classified as steel (ISO P-class). Its TPG-style clamped holding method makes it compatible with standard TP-series toolholders. The ANSI code is TPG322 and the ISO equivalent code is TPGN160308, covering a 3/8-inch inscribed circle, 1/8-inch insert thickness, and a 1/32-inch corner radius. Typical applications include turning steel components in production machining environments where consistent tool life and surface finish are required. This insert carries no chipbreaker (N designation), making it appropriate for continuous cuts with controlled chip flow.

Installation should be performed by a qualified machinist following the toolholder manufacturer's clamping torque and seating specifications. Power down and lock out the machine spindle before changing inserts. Inspect the insert pocket and clamping screw for wear or debris before seating a new insert. Never force an insert into a pocket; improper seating can cause insert fracture or workpiece damage.
