The SUMITOMO 10T5AQH is a solid carbide turning insert in a VNGG style, designed for precision external turning operations on CNC lathes and turning centers. It features a TiAlSiN coating applied via PVD process under Sumitomo's proprietary Absotech Bronze designation, which provides high heat resistance and wear protection at the cutting edge. The insert has a 35-degree diamond shape (V-code), a 3/8-inch inscribed circle, and a 0.0156-inch corner radius. Grade AC5015S is engineered specifically for machining powdered metal workpiece materials. A screw-clamping hold method and neutral hand orientation make it suitable for a range of toolholder setups.
This insert is primarily specified for turning powdered metal components, classified under primary workpiece material code S. The EEF chip breaker geometry and negative rake angle (20 degrees) support controlled chip formation in these demanding materials. The VNGG configuration with a clearance code of N and tolerance code of G means it is intended for finish and semi-finish turning passes where dimensional accuracy and surface finish are critical. It is installed by CNC machinists and tool and die professionals in production turning environments, including aerospace, automotive, and precision parts manufacturing applications.
Designed as an OEM-style replacement or direct-specification insert for VNGG-style screw-clamp toolholders accepting a 3/8-inch inscribed circle, 3/16-inch thick diamond insert. Compatible toolholders must accommodate a 0.1500-inch hole diameter for screw clamping. Verify toolholder manufacturer specifications before installation.
Installation is performed by a qualified CNC machinist or toolroom technician. The machine spindle must be fully stopped and the machine placed in a safe lockout state before changing inserts. Use the appropriate Torx or hex key as specified by the toolholder manufacturer to seat the clamping screw to the correct torque per the toolholder documentation. Inspect the insert pocket and clamping screw for wear or damage before seating a new insert.
