The STARRETT 72454 is a ball-style contact point designed for use with Starrett dial test indicators. It replaces the standard contact tip on the indicator spindle, providing a precise spherical contact surface for measuring curved, irregular, or hard-to-reach workpiece features. The ball tip diameter is 0.0315 inches (0.80 mm), and the overall contact point length is 33.34 mm. The tip is machined from steel for durability and wear resistance. Machinists, toolroom technicians, and quality control inspectors install this contact point as part of routine indicator setup or when a ball tip geometry is required for a specific measurement task.
This contact point is used in precision measurement applications where a standard flat or pointed tip is not suitable. Ball contact points are commonly used on curved surfaces, bores, and contoured parts where a flat tip would rock or a pointed tip would produce inconsistent readings. The 72454 is sized for benchtop, surface plate, and machine-tool measurement setups in both production and inspection environments.
Designed for use with Starrett 811 and 811M Dial Test Indicators.
Contact point replacement is performed by machinists and metrology technicians using standard indicator wrenches or small hand tools. Remove the existing contact point by unthreading it from the indicator spindle, then thread the 72454 in until snug — do not overtighten, as excessive torque can damage the spindle threads. Zero the indicator after installing a new contact point to account for any length difference. Handle the ball tip carefully to avoid nicking or contaminating the contact surface.
