The STARRETT 68621 is a magnetic-base indicator positioner holder designed to secure dial indicators and similar precision measuring instruments during inspection and machining operations. It features an articulated arm that allows multi-axis positioning and a fine adjustment mechanism for precise gauge placement. The rectangular magnetic base delivers 70 pounds of pull force, holding the assembly firmly to ferrous surfaces such as machine tables, surface plates, lathe beds, and milling fixtures. The unit ships complete with the base included. Machinists, toolroom technicians, and quality control inspectors install and use this type of holder in production and inspection environments.
The 68621 is suited for use in machine shops, toolrooms, and quality control stations where a dial indicator or test indicator must be held in a fixed position relative to a workpiece. The articulated arm provides the reach and angular flexibility needed to position a gauge on irregular or hard-to-access surfaces. The adjustable rectangular base can be placed on any clean, flat ferrous surface. Fine adjustment allows repeatable, controlled repositioning without disturbing the magnetic hold.
Designed as an OEM-style accessory compatible with standard dial indicators and test indicators that use conventional stem or post mounting, as used across general machining and inspection setups.
Ensure the mounting surface is clean and free of chips, oil film, or debris before engaging the magnetic base, as contamination reduces effective holding force. Engage the magnetic lock fully before applying load to the arm or adjusting the indicator. Technicians should verify that the base pull force is adequate for the expected vibration and cutting forces present in the work environment. Do not mount on non-ferrous surfaces such as aluminum or granite without an appropriate adapter or clamping fixture.
