The STARRETT 68007 is a mechanical outside micrometer designed for precision linear measurement in machine shops, fabrication facilities, and industrial maintenance environments. It covers a 2-inch measurement range with a graduation of 0.0001 inches and an accuracy of 0.000050 inches, making it suitable for close-tolerance inspection work. The micrometer features a friction thimble for consistent measuring force and solid carbide measuring faces on both the anvil and spindle for extended wear resistance. A ring-style lock nut and included wrench allow the reading to be secured before removing the tool from the workpiece.
This outside micrometer is used in applications requiring precise external dimensional checks on round stock, flat material, and machined components. It is well suited for quality control inspection, incoming material verification, and in-process measurement on manual or CNC machine setups. The solid carbide contact faces extend service life when measuring hardened or abrasive materials. Machinists, toolmakers, metrologists, and precision maintenance technicians are the primary users of this instrument.
Designed as a standard outside micrometer for general-purpose external measurement applications across machine shop, fabrication, and industrial maintenance environments.
Outside micrometers require no installation but should be calibrated against a known standard before use and stored in a protective case when not in service. Clean the anvil and spindle faces with a lint-free cloth before each use to prevent debris from affecting accuracy. Do not overtighten the thimble against the workpiece; rely on the friction thimble mechanism to apply consistent measuring force. Calibration and use should follow applicable metrology lab procedures or shop quality standards.
