The STARRETT 59148 is an O1 oil-hardening tool steel flat stock bar used in toolmaking, die work, jig fabrication, and precision machining applications. Manufactured to AISI Type O1 specification, this flat stock measures 1/32 inch thick, 4 inches wide, and 36 inches long. Thickness tolerance is held to plus or minus 0.001 inches, making it suitable for applications where dimensional accuracy is critical before heat treatment. At 1.28 pounds, the bar is easy to handle for bench work. Machinists, toolmakers, and die makers rely on O1 stock for its consistent pre-hardened machinability and predictable oil-quench response.
This flat stock is suited for fabricating punches, dies, gauges, cutting tools, and fixture components in both job shop and production toolroom environments. Cutting, grinding, and machining of tool steel flat stock should be performed by qualified toolmakers or machinists using appropriate cutting fluids and tooling rated for tool steel. Secure the workpiece firmly before any sawing or milling operation. Heat treatment, including hardening and tempering, should follow established metallurgical procedures for AISI O1 tool steel and be performed by personnel familiar with proper quench media handling and furnace controls. Allow the material to reach a uniform temperature throughout cross-section before quenching to avoid distortion or cracking.
