The STARRETT 59147 is an O1 oil-hardening tool steel flat stock bar used in precision toolmaking, die work, and machining applications. Manufactured to AISI Type O1 specifications, this flat stock measures 1/32 inch thick, 3 inches wide, and 36 inches long, with a thickness tolerance of +/- 0.001 inches. O1 tool steel is a widely used oil-hardening grade known for its dimensional stability during heat treatment, good machinability in the annealed state, and ability to hold a sharp edge after hardening. Machinists, tool and die makers, and fabricators stock this material for producing punches, dies, gauges, and precision fixtures.
This flat stock is suited for machine shops, tool rooms, and fabrication environments requiring close-tolerance stock in the annealed condition ready for machining and subsequent oil-hardening heat treatment. The 36-inch length provides practical cut-down stock for multiple workpiece blanks. The 3-inch width accommodates a broad range of tool and die blank profiles without excess material removal. Each piece ships as a single unit at 0.96 pounds, making it practical for bench-scale and production toolroom use alike.
Designed as a standard O1 oil-hardening flat stock for general toolroom and die-making use where AISI Type O1 material specification is required.
Cutting and machining should be performed in the annealed state prior to heat treatment. Oil-hardening heat treatment requires controlled furnace equipment and proper quenching technique — follow established metallurgical procedures or consult a qualified heat treater. Wear appropriate PPE when cutting, grinding, or handling tool steel stock with sharp edges. Secure workpieces firmly in a vise or fixture before machining to maintain dimensional accuracy.
