The STARRETT 59144 is an O1 oil-hardening tool steel flat stock bar used in toolmaking, die making, punch fabrication, and precision machining applications. Measuring 1/32 inch thick, 1 inch wide, and 36 inches long, it is manufactured to tight dimensional tolerances: plus or minus 0.001 inches on thickness, zero to minus 0.005 inches on width, and plus 0.015 inches on length. The AISI Type O1 alloy offers excellent machinability in the annealed state and responds well to oil-quench hardening, making it a go-to material for shops that need predictable hardening performance and stable dimensions in finished tooling.
This flat stock is suited for machine shops, tool and die shops, and maintenance departments fabricating custom cutting tools, guides, fixtures, jigs, and gages. The 36-inch bar length allows machinists and toolmakers to cut multiple blanks from a single piece. At 1/32 inch thickness and 1 inch width, it works well for thin blades, shims, and precision blanking tools that require oil-hardening steel with consistent cross-section.
Designed as a standard O1 oil-hardening tool steel flat bar suitable for general toolmaking, die making, and precision fabrication applications requiring AISI Type O1 material specification.
Cutting and machining of tool steel flat stock should be performed with appropriate metalworking equipment by qualified machinists or toolmakers. Use proper coolant and cutting speeds suitable for annealed tool steel to maintain dimensional accuracy and surface finish. Heat treatment, including oil quenching, should follow established metallurgical procedures for AISI O1 and be performed by personnel experienced with tool steel hardening. Always wear appropriate personal protective equipment when cutting, grinding, or heat treating.
