The STARRETT 59140 is an O1 oil-hardening tool steel flat stock bar used in toolmaking, die work, jig fabrication, and precision machining applications. Manufactured to AISI Type O1 specifications, this flat stock measures 1/64 inch thick, 2 inches wide, and 36 inches long. Thickness and squareness tolerances are held to plus or minus 0.001 inches, making it suitable for work requiring close dimensional control. The bar ships in an unhardened, annealed condition and can be oil-quenched after machining to achieve the hardness required for cutting tools, punches, and wear components. Machinists, tool-and-die makers, and skilled fabricators are the primary users.
O1 tool steel flat stock is used across job shops, maintenance departments, and toolrooms wherever a machinable blank is needed before heat treatment. Common applications include fabricating custom punches, dies, blades, gauges, and wear plates. The 36-inch length and 2-inch width make this bar practical for multiple shorter blanks cut from a single piece. The 1/64-inch thickness suits thin punch blanks, shim stock conversions, and precision flat components where material needs to be finished to a very close final dimension.
Designed as a standard AISI O1 oil-hardening tool steel flat stock blank suitable for general toolroom, die-making, and precision fabrication applications requiring a thin, wide flat profile before finish machining and heat treatment.
Cutting and machining of O1 tool steel flat stock should be performed in the annealed condition using appropriate tooling for high-carbon steel. Secure the workpiece firmly before cutting to prevent deflection on thin stock. Heat treatment, including hardening and tempering, should follow established metallurgical procedures for AISI O1 steel and be performed by qualified personnel or a commercial heat treater. Handle finished, hardened pieces carefully — hardened O1 is brittle and susceptible to chipping from impact.
