The STARRETT 58897 is an O1 oil-hardening tool steel flat stock bar used in toolmaking, die work, punches, and precision machining applications. Manufactured to AISI Type O1 specification, this flat stock measures 0.125 inches thick, 0.3125 inches wide, and 36 inches long, with a weight of 0.4 pounds. Thickness tolerance is held to plus or minus 0.001 inches, making it suitable for applications where close dimensional control is required before hardening. Machinists, tool and die makers, and metalworking shops use this stock to fabricate custom cutting tools, jigs, fixtures, and wear components.
This flat stock is suited for job shops, maintenance facilities, and production toolrooms working with ferrous tooling materials. Its O1 oil-hardening grade responds predictably to heat treatment, allowing the finished part to reach high hardness with minimal distortion when quenched in oil. The 36-inch length provides enough material to yield multiple shorter blanks depending on the application. It is sold as individual pieces and is appropriate for both prototype and production tooling work.
Designed as a standard O1 oil-hardening tool steel flat stock blank for use in general toolmaking, die making, and precision machining applications where AISI Type O1 material is specified.
Cutting and grinding of tool steel flat stock should be performed by a qualified machinist using appropriate metalworking equipment. Secure the workpiece firmly before sawing or milling to prevent movement. Heat treatment, including hardening and tempering, should follow established metallurgical procedures for AISI O1 tool steel and be performed by personnel familiar with oil-quench heat treating. Allow the material to cool completely before handling after any thermal process.
