The STARRETT 58893 is an O1 oil-hardening tool steel flat stock bar used in toolmaking, die work, jig fabrication, and precision machining applications. Manufactured to AISI Type O1 specification, this flat stock measures 0.25 inches thick, 0.625 inches wide, and 36 inches long, weighing 1.6 pounds. O1 tool steel is valued for its ability to hold a fine edge after hardening and its predictable dimensional behavior during heat treatment. Thickness tolerance is held to plus or minus 0.001 inches, making this stock suitable for applications that require tight dimensional control before and after machining.
This flat stock is intended for tool and die makers, machinists, and precision fabricators working in job shops, maintenance facilities, or production environments. It is commonly used to produce punches, dies, gauges, cutting tools, and form blocks. The 36-inch length allows single-piece layouts for most bench-scale tooling projects or can be cut to shorter blanks as needed. O1 grade is preferred when moderate toughness, good machinability in the annealed state, and oil-quench hardening are required.
Designed as a standard O1 oil-hardening tool steel flat bar suitable for general toolmaking, die making, and precision machining applications requiring AISI Type O1 material specification.
Cutting, grinding, and machining should be completed in the annealed state before heat treatment. Oil hardening and tempering operations should be performed by a qualified heat treater following established procedures for AISI O1 tool steel. Use appropriate personal protective equipment and ventilation when grinding or cutting tool steel. Handle edges carefully as ground flat stock edges can be sharp.
