The STARRETT 57669 is an A2 air-hardening tool steel flat stock bar used in toolmaking, die work, and precision machining applications. Measuring 1.5 inches thick, 4 inches wide, and 18 inches long, this flat stock is manufactured from AISI Type A2 tool steel, which offers excellent dimensional stability during heat treatment and strong wear resistance after hardening. Thickness, width, and square tolerances are held to +0.010 to 0.015 inches, with a length tolerance of +0.25 inches, making this stock suitable for applications where close fits are required before final grinding. Machinists, toolmakers, and die makers are the primary installers of this material.
A2 air-hardening flat stock is used in the fabrication of dies, punches, forming tools, fixtures, and gauges across both job shop and production environments. The air-hardening characteristic of A2 tool steel minimizes distortion during the hardening cycle compared to oil-hardening grades, making it a common choice for flat die components and close-tolerance tooling. This bar is delivered in the annealed condition and is intended for rough machining, heat treatment, and finish grinding to final dimensions.
Designed as a general-purpose A2 air-hardening tool steel flat stock for use in toolmaking, die making, and precision machining applications where AISI A2 material specification is required.
Machining and heat treatment of tool steel flat stock should be performed by qualified toolmakers or machinists familiar with AISI A2 grade requirements. Work to final dimensions before hardening; allow adequate stock for finish grinding after the heat treat cycle. Follow the material supplier's recommended austenitizing and air-quench procedure for A2 tool steel. Handle with appropriate lifting equipment given the 30.6-pound weight of this bar.
