The STARRETT 57649 is an A2 air-hardening tool steel flat stock bar used in tool and die work, jig and fixture fabrication, and precision machining applications. It is manufactured to AISI Type A2 material specification, offering good dimensional stability during heat treatment and a balance of wear resistance and toughness. The bar measures 1 inch thick, 3.5 inches wide, and 18 inches long, with close-tolerance grinding on all faces. Thickness, width, and square tolerances are held to +0.010 to 0.015 inches, and length tolerance is +0.25 inches. At 17.72 pounds, this is a solid, ready-to-machine blank suited for professional shop use.
This flat stock is used in toolroom and production environments where air-hardening steel is specified for its minimal distortion characteristics. Typical applications include punches, dies, forming tools, gauges, and fixtures. It is handled by tool and die makers, machinists, and metalworking shops that require close-tolerance pre-ground stock that can be machined, hardened, and finished to final dimensions without excessive rework after heat treat.
Designed as a general-purpose A2 tool steel flat blank for toolroom and production machining applications where AISI A2 air-hardening material is specified.
Machining and heat treatment of A2 tool steel should be performed by qualified tool and die makers or machinists familiar with air-hardening steel procedures. Secure the workpiece properly before cutting or grinding operations. Follow established shop safety practices when handling stock of this weight and size. Heat treatment should be carried out in accordance with the material manufacturer's recommended temperature and quench procedure for AISI A2 steel.
