The STARRETT 57647 is an A2 air-hardening tool steel flat stock bar used in toolmaking, die work, and precision machining applications. Measuring 1 inch thick, 1-3/4 inches wide, and 18 inches long, this flat stock is supplied to close dimensional tolerances: plus 0.010 to 0.015 inches on thickness, width, and squareness, and plus 0.25 inches on length. A2 tool steel offers good toughness and wear resistance with minimal distortion during air hardening, making it a reliable choice for punches, dies, gauges, and similar toolroom components. Machinists and tool-and-die makers work with this material in its annealed state before heat treating to final hardness.
This flat stock is suited for job shops, toolrooms, and maintenance departments that fabricate or repair tooling in-house. The 18-inch length allows for multiple blanks to be cut from a single piece, reducing material waste on short-run tooling projects. The bar arrives in an annealed condition, ready for machining, grinding, and subsequent heat treatment. Typical applications include forming dies, stripper plates, wear pads, and precision fixtures where dimensional stability after hardening is critical.
Designed as a general-purpose A2 tool steel flat stock blank suitable for toolroom fabrication of punches, dies, gauges, fixtures, and wear components requiring air-hardening tool steel.
Cutting and machining of tool steel flat stock should be performed by qualified machinists or tool-and-die makers using appropriate cutting fluids and equipment rated for hardened or semi-hardened materials. Follow proper heat-treatment procedures for A2 tool steel, including recommended austenitizing temperature ranges and air-quench protocols, as specified by the material supplier or a qualified metallurgist. Always wear appropriate PPE when sawing, grinding, or milling tool steel bar stock. De-burr all cut edges before handling or further processing.
