The STARRETT 57638 is an A2 air-hardening tool steel flat stock bar intended for toolmakers, machinists, and die makers who need a precision-ground blank ready for heat treatment. Cut to 18 inches in length, 1-1/2 inches wide, and 7/8 inches thick, this flat stock ships in an annealed condition so it can be machined before hardening. A2 tool steel offers good dimensional stability during air hardening, making it a dependable choice for punches, dies, gauges, and cutting tools where tight tolerances after heat treat are critical. The piece weighs approximately 6.69 pounds.
This flat stock is suited for tool-and-die shops, maintenance and repair operations, and prototype tooling environments. Typical applications include blanking dies, form dies, trimming tools, and precision gauging components where A2 is specified for its balance of wear resistance and toughness. It is appropriate for both short-run production tooling and one-off shop fixtures.
Designed as a general-purpose A2 tool steel flat stock blank compatible with standard toolmaking and die-making applications where AISI A2 material specification is required.
Machining and heat treatment of tool steel should be performed by qualified toolmakers or machinists familiar with A2 steel processing procedures. All grinding and cutting operations should follow appropriate shop safety practices, including eye protection and adequate coolant or air blast to prevent localized overheating of the stock. Heat treatment, including hardening and tempering, should follow the material manufacturer's recommended thermal cycle for A2 tool steel. Handle edges with care, as machined tool steel stock can carry sharp burrs.
