The STARRETT 57637 is an A2 air-hardening tool steel flat stock bar intended for toolmakers, machinists, die makers, and metalworking professionals who require a precision-ground blank ready for heat treatment. Cut to 7/8 inch thick, 1-1/4 inches wide, and 18 inches long, this flat stock arrives with tightly controlled tolerances: +0.010 to 0.015 inches on thickness, width, and squareness, and +0.25 inches on length. A2 tool steel offers good wear resistance and dimensional stability through the air-hardening process, making it a practical choice for punches, dies, gages, and similar tooling applications.
This flat stock is suited for job shops, tool and die operations, and maintenance departments that fabricate or repair tooling in-house. The bar is supplied in the annealed condition and is ready for machining prior to hardening. The 18-inch length accommodates a range of tooling blanks without requiring initial saw work for most standard applications. A2 material is commonly selected where balanced toughness and wear resistance are needed at moderate hardening temperatures.
Designed as a standard A2 tool steel flat stock blank for general toolmaking, die making, and precision machining applications where AISI A2 air-hardening steel is specified.
Machining and heat treatment of A2 tool steel should be performed by qualified toolmakers or machinists familiar with tool steel processing. All grinding, milling, and drilling operations should be completed prior to hardening. Follow the material manufacturer's recommended austenitizing and air-quench procedure for A2 steel to achieve target hardness. Appropriate personal protective equipment is required when machining or heat-treating tool steel.
