The STARRETT 57636 is an A2 air-hardening tool steel flat stock bar measuring 7/8 inch thick, 1 inch wide, and 18 inches long. A2 tool steel is a chromium-molybdenum air-hardening grade known for its dimensional stability during heat treatment, good toughness, and wear resistance. This flat stock is supplied in the annealed condition, ready for machining before hardening. It is used by tool and die makers, machinists, and metalworking professionals to fabricate punches, dies, gauges, and custom tooling components where predictable hardening and close tolerance are required.
This flat stock is suited for tool room and production applications where A2 air-hardening steel is specified. Typical uses include blanking dies, forming dies, trim dies, and precision gauges in both job shop and industrial manufacturing environments. The 18-inch length provides a practical starting blank for most tooling applications. The bar is machined and ground to close tolerances, making it appropriate for direct use in fixture and die construction without extensive preliminary stock removal.
Designed as a standard A2 tool steel flat stock blank for use in tool and die, gauging, and general metalworking applications where AISI A2 air-hardening steel is required.
A2 tool steel flat stock is machined and finished by qualified tool and die makers or machinists. All cutting, grinding, and heat-treating operations should follow established shop safety practices and applicable tooling specifications. Heat treatment should be performed by qualified personnel familiar with air-hardening tool steel procedures. Allow the material to reach ambient temperature before precise measurement, as thermal expansion affects close-tolerance work.
