The STARRETT 57635 is an A2 air-hardening tool steel flat stock bar intended for toolmakers, machinists, and die makers who require consistent, machinable stock ahead of heat treatment. AISI A2 tool steel offers good dimensional stability during air hardening, making it a practical choice where distortion control after hardening is critical. This bar measures 7/8 inches thick by 7/8 inches wide by 18 inches long and ships at approximately 3.9 pounds. Thickness, width, and square tolerances are held to +0.010 to 0.015 inches, and length tolerance is +0.25 inches, giving fabricators a reliable starting point for blanks, punches, dies, and gauges.
This flat stock is suited for tool rooms, job shops, and maintenance departments that machine their own tooling components. Typical applications include cutting and forming dies, jigs, fixtures, and wear-resistant machine parts. The 18-inch length allows for cutting multiple shorter blanks from a single piece, reducing waste. A2 material is frequently specified where moderate toughness and good wear resistance are needed after heat treat, without the quench cracking risk associated with oil-hardening grades.

Machining and cutting of tool steel flat stock should be performed by qualified machinists or toolmakers using appropriate metal-cutting equipment and personal protective equipment. Follow standard shop practices for securing workpieces and controlling chips when machining high-carbon tool steel. Heat treatment of A2 steel, including hardening and tempering, should be carried out according to the material manufacturer's specifications and applicable shop safety procedures. Do not attempt to weld or flame-cut this material without consulting appropriate A2 tool steel handling guidelines.
