The STARRETT 57629 is an A2 air-hardening tool steel flat stock bar intended for toolmaking, die work, and precision machining applications. Manufactured from AISI Type A2 tool steel, this flat stock offers good dimensional stability during heat treatment and strong wear resistance after hardening. The bar measures 0.75 inches thick, 4.5 inches wide, and 18 inches long, with a weight of 17.24 pounds. Thickness, width, and squareness tolerances are held to +0.010 to 0.015 inches, and length tolerance is +0.25 inches. These tight tolerances reduce the amount of pre-machining required before layout and hardening operations.
This flat stock is suited for fabrication of punches, dies, gauges, fixtures, and tooling blanks in job shop, tool and die, and production machining environments. A2 air-hardening tool steel is a standard material choice where dimensional control through the hardening cycle is critical and oil-quench distortion is unacceptable. Machinists, tool and die makers, and metalworking professionals work with this material in both prototype and production tooling contexts.
Designed as a standard A2 tool steel flat stock blank suitable for general toolmaking, die making, and precision machining applications requiring AISI A2 air-hardening material.
Cutting and machining of A2 tool steel flat stock should be performed by qualified machinists or tool and die makers using appropriate metalworking equipment. All heat treatment, including hardening and tempering, should follow established procedures for AISI A2 air-hardening steel and be performed by qualified personnel. Personal protective equipment appropriate to metalworking and heat treatment operations should be used at all times. Allow material to reach thermal equilibrium before finish machining to maintain dimensional accuracy.
