The STARRETT 57627 is an A2 air-hardening tool steel flat stock bar measuring 3/4 inch thick, 2-1/2 inches wide, and 18 inches long. A2 tool steel is a versatile, medium-alloy, air-hardening grade known for its dimensional stability during heat treatment and good wear resistance. This flat stock is supplied in the annealed condition, ready for machining before hardening. Thickness, width, and squareness tolerances are held to +0.010 to +0.015 inches, and length tolerance is +0.250 inch. Machinists, tool-and-die makers, and metalworking shops use this material to fabricate punches, dies, gauges, and other precision tooling components.
A2 air-hardening flat stock is a standard choice for toolroom and job-shop applications where close-tolerance blanks are needed without the quench distortion risk of oil-hardening grades. The 18-inch length provides sufficient stock for a range of die and fixture components. At 9.56 pounds, this bar is sized for bench machining on a manual or CNC mill before final heat treatment and grinding to finished dimensions.
Designed as a standard AISI Type A2 air-hardening tool steel flat stock suitable for general toolroom fabrication of dies, punches, gauges, and fixture components where dimensional stability during hardening is required.
This material is worked by qualified machinists and tool-and-die makers using standard milling, drilling, and grinding equipment. Machine to near-final dimensions before sending to heat treatment, as A2 steel is air-hardened and should not be quenched in oil or water. Follow the material supplier heat-treat specifications for austenitizing temperature and temper cycles. Wear appropriate PPE when cutting or grinding tool steel.
