The STARRETT 57625 is an A2 air-hardening tool steel flat stock bar used in toolmaking, die work, punch fabrication, and precision machining applications. Measuring 0.75 inches thick by 1.25 inches wide by 18 inches long, this flat stock is ground to close tolerances and supplied in the annealed condition, ready for machining before heat treatment. A2 tool steel offers good dimensional stability during air hardening and a balance of wear resistance and toughness suited to cold-work tooling. Weighing approximately 4.78 pounds, the bar is sized for single-piece or short-run tool fabrication by machinists, toolmakers, and die makers.
This flat stock is used in shop environments where precision cold-work tooling is fabricated or repaired. Typical applications include blanking dies, forming dies, punches, gauges, and cutting tools. The 18-inch length provides sufficient stock for most single-component tool blanks. The air-hardening A2 grade is commonly specified where distortion control during heat treatment is a priority over the higher wear resistance of D2 or the toughness of O1.
Designed as a standard A2 tool steel flat stock blank for cold-work die and tooling fabrication in machine shop and toolroom environments.
Machining and heat treatment of A2 tool steel should be performed by qualified toolmakers or machinists familiar with cold-work tool steel processing. Air hardening requires controlled furnace equipment and proper soak times; consult the steel supplier or AISI guidelines for recommended heat treatment parameters. Always allow the bar to reach ambient temperature before precision measurement. Secure workholding and appropriate HSS or carbide tooling should be used when machining in the annealed state.
