The STARRETT 57618 is an A2 air-hardening tool steel flat stock bar sized at 9/16 inch thick, 4 inches wide, and 18 inches long. A2 tool steel is an air-hardening, cold-work die steel known for its dimensional stability during heat treatment and good wear resistance. This flat stock is supplied in the annealed condition, ready for machining before hardening. It is used by tool and die makers, machinists, and metalworking shops to fabricate punches, dies, gauges, and precision tooling components. Thickness tolerance runs from plus 0.010 to 0.015 inches, and width tolerance is plus 0.010 to 0.015 inches, reflecting the tight dimensional control expected of precision tool steel stock.
This flat stock is suited for job shops, tool rooms, and production environments where A2 grade material is specified. Typical applications include cutting dies, forming tools, blanking punches, and gauging fixtures in both light industrial and heavy manufacturing settings. The 18-inch length provides enough material for multiple tool blanks from a single piece. The part ships as a single bar with a minimum order quantity of one.
Designed as a standard A2 tool steel flat stock blank for use in tool and die, punch and die, and general precision tooling applications requiring AISI A2 grade material.
Machining and heat treatment of A2 tool steel should be performed by qualified tool and die makers or machinists familiar with cold-work die steels. Appropriate cutting speeds, feeds, and tooling should be selected for the annealed hardness of A2 stock. Heat treatment, including hardening and tempering, should follow established metallurgical guidelines for AISI A2 and should be performed in controlled-atmosphere or vacuum furnaces to minimize scaling. Always use appropriate personal protective equipment when cutting, grinding, or machining tool steel bar stock.
