The STARRETT 57615 is an A2 air-hardening tool steel flat stock bar measuring 9/16 inch thick, 2 inches wide, and 18 inches long. A2 tool steel is a versatile, oil- and air-hardening die steel known for its dimensional stability during heat treatment and good wear resistance, making it a go-to material for dies, punches, gauges, and precision tooling components. This flat stock ships in the annealed condition, ready for machining before hardening. Machinists, tool-and-die makers, and maintenance shops use this material when tighter tolerances and consistent cross-section are required throughout the part blank.
This flat stock is suited for fabrication of stamping dies, forming tools, cutting tools, jigs, and fixtures in job shops, production tooling departments, and maintenance facilities. The 18-inch length provides adequate stock for most single-piece tool blanks, and the 2-inch width accommodates a range of die and punch profiles without requiring additional edge milling in many applications. The controlled tolerances on all four faces reduce the need for extensive pre-machining cleanup before layout.
Designed as a standard flat stock blank for use in any application calling for AISI A2 air-hardening tool steel in a 9/16 x 2 x 18 inch form factor, including die making, punch fabrication, and precision tooling.
Machining and grinding of A2 tool steel flat stock should be performed prior to hardening and tempering. Heat treatment must follow the manufacturer-recommended austenitizing, air-quench, and temper cycle for A2 tool steel to achieve target hardness. Handle with appropriate cutting fluids during machining to manage heat buildup. Always wear appropriate PPE when grinding or machining tool steel stock.
