The STARRETT 57606 is an A2 air-hardening tool steel flat stock bar measuring 0.5 inches thick, 0.625 inches wide, and 18 inches long. A2 tool steel is a cold-work die steel known for its good dimensional stability during heat treatment and its balance of hardness and toughness after air hardening. This stock is supplied in the annealed condition, ready for machining to final dimensions before hardening. It is used by tool and die makers, machinists, and metalworking shops to fabricate punches, dies, gauges, and precision tooling components. The piece weighs 1.59 pounds.
This flat stock is suited for applications requiring a tool steel that holds tight tolerances through the air-hardening process. Typical uses include cutting dies, forming dies, blanking punches, jigs, and fixtures where moderate wear resistance and good toughness are needed. The 18-inch length allows for multiple blanks to be cut from a single piece, reducing material waste on short-run tooling jobs. Machinists working in job shops, production toolrooms, and maintenance departments will find this size practical for small-to-medium die components.
Designed as a standard A2 tool steel flat bar for general toolroom and die-making applications where AISI A2 air-hardening material is specified.
Cutting and machining of tool steel flat stock should be performed by qualified machinists using appropriate speeds and feeds for the annealed material condition. Heat treatment to final hardness should follow the material supplier recommendations for AISI A2 steel and be performed by a qualified heat treater. Always wear appropriate PPE including eye protection and gloves when sawing or grinding tool steel bar stock. Deburr all edges after cutting to prevent handling injuries and to ensure accurate fixture fit-up.
