The STARRETT 57592 is an A2 air-hardening tool steel flat stock bar used in toolmaking, die making, and precision machining applications. Measuring 5/16 inches thick, 1-3/4 inches wide, and 18 inches long, this flat stock ships in an annealed condition and is designed to be machined to shape before heat treatment. A2 tool steel offers good wear resistance, moderate toughness, and excellent dimensional stability during air-hardening — making it a reliable choice for punches, dies, gauges, and similar toolroom components. Licensed machinists, tool and die makers, and industrial maintenance professionals work with this material regularly.
This flat stock is suited for both prototype and production tooling environments. The annealed state allows conventional machining with standard HSS or carbide tooling before the part is heat treated to final hardness. At 2.79 pounds per piece, it is manageable for bench or machine work. Typical applications include blanking dies, forming dies, trimming punches, and precision fixtures where close tolerance and predictable heat-treat response are required.
Designed as a standard AISI A2 tool steel flat stock suitable for toolroom, die shop, and precision machining applications requiring air-hardening tool steel in this size range.
Cutting and machining of tool steel flat stock should be performed by qualified machinists using appropriate cutting speeds and coolant for the material grade. Secure the workpiece firmly in a vise or fixture before cutting to prevent movement. Heat treatment to final hardness should be performed by a qualified heat treater following AISI A2 processing guidelines. Always wear appropriate PPE, including eye protection and cut-resistant gloves, when handling or cutting flat stock.
