The STARRETT 57585 is an A2 air-hardening tool steel flat stock bar intended for toolmakers, machinists, and die makers who require a precision-ground blank ready for hardening and finishing. Measuring 0.25 inches thick, 7 inches wide, and 18 inches long, this flat stock ships in an oversize condition to allow for finish grinding after heat treatment. Thickness, width, and squareness tolerances are held to +0.010 to 0.015 inches, and length tolerance is +0.25 inches. A2 tool steel offers good toughness, moderate wear resistance, and minimal distortion during air-hardening heat treatment, making it a reliable choice for punches, dies, gauges, and similar tooling components.
A2 flat stock at this cross-section is commonly used in tool and die shops, maintenance machine shops, and precision fabrication environments. The 7-inch width and 18-inch length make it suitable for larger die plates, fixture bases, and stripper plates where stock removal after hardening needs to be accounted for in the design layout. This material is supplied in the annealed condition and must be heat treated by a qualified toolroom professional or commercial heat treater before use in hardened tooling applications.
Designed as a general-purpose A2 tool steel flat stock blank compatible with standard toolroom machining, grinding, and air-hardening heat treatment processes per AISI Type A2 material specification.
Machining and heat treatment of tool steel should be performed by qualified toolroom or machine shop personnel familiar with AISI A2 material requirements. All rough machining should be completed in the annealed condition before sending to heat treatment. Do not attempt to flame-harden or water-quench A2 steel; it is designed strictly for air-hardening cycles. Follow the heat treater's recommended austenitizing temperature and air-cool procedure to achieve target hardness while minimizing distortion.
