The STARRETT 57583 is an A2 air-hardening tool steel flat stock bar used in toolmaking, die work, and precision machining applications. Manufactured from AISI A2 tool steel, this flat stock measures 0.25 inches thick, 1.75 inches wide, and 18 inches long, with a shipping weight of 2.23 pounds. A2 tool steel offers good dimensional stability during heat treatment and resists wear in demanding cutting and forming applications. Thickness, width, and squareness tolerances all fall within +0.010 to +0.015 inches, and the length tolerance is +0.25 inches. This stock is supplied in the annealed condition and is ready for machining before hardening.
This flat stock is suited for fabricating punches, dies, gauges, and cutting tools in machine shops, tool rooms, and industrial maintenance environments. The A2 air-hardening grade is a common choice where minimal distortion after hardening is required. It is appropriate for both short-run and production tooling work and is used by tool-and-die makers, machinists, and maintenance technicians working with precision tooling components.
Designed as a standard A2 tool steel flat stock for use in tool-and-die fabrication, punch and die sets, gauges, and similar precision tooling applications requiring air-hardening tool steel.
Machining of A2 tool steel flat stock should be performed in the annealed condition before hardening. Heat treating to final hardness requires a controlled atmosphere or vacuum furnace to achieve the air-hardening properties of A2 steel and should be performed by qualified personnel following established metallurgical procedures. Always use appropriate personal protective equipment when cutting, grinding, or machining tool steel. Secure the workpiece firmly before any machining operation.
