The STARRETT 57580 is an A2 air-hardening tool steel flat stock bar measuring 0.25 inches thick, 0.25 inches wide, and 18 inches long. A2 tool steel is a versatile cold-work die steel known for its good dimensional stability during heat treatment and solid wear resistance after hardening. This flat stock is used by tool and die makers, machinists, and metalworking professionals to fabricate punches, dies, gauges, and custom tooling components. At 0.32 pounds, the piece ships as a single bar and requires no minimum order beyond one unit.
This flat stock is suited for small-scale tooling fabrication in job shops and production machine shops. The close thickness, width, and squareness tolerances of plus 0.010 to 0.015 inches make it ready for applications that demand tight dimensional control prior to final grinding and heat treatment. The length tolerance of plus 0.25 inches allows for a standard saw-cut allowance. A2 material in this size is commonly used for small punches, form tools, and jig components where air-hardening capability simplifies shop heat treat procedures.
Designed as a standard A2 air-hardening flat stock bar suitable for general cold-work tooling fabrication wherever AISI A2 tool steel in 0.25 inch by 0.25 inch flat bar form is specified.
Cutting and machining of A2 tool steel flat stock should be performed by qualified machinists or tool and die makers using appropriate carbide or high-speed tooling. Material should be in the annealed condition for machining prior to heat treatment. Air-hardening heat treat procedures should follow the material specification and be performed with appropriate safety equipment. All grinding and finishing operations on hardened tool steel should be done with adequate coolant to prevent surface damage.
