The STARRETT 57527 is an A2 air-hardening tool steel flat stock bar sized at 5/16 inches thick by 5/16 inches wide by 18 inches long. A2 tool steel is a versatile cold-work die steel known for its excellent dimensional stability during heat treatment and good wear resistance after hardening. This stock is supplied in the annealed condition, ready for machining, grinding, and fitting prior to heat treat. Machinists, tool-and-die makers, and toolroom technicians use this material to fabricate punches, dies, blades, gauges, and other precision tooling components. At 0.49 pounds, it is a lightweight, single-piece blank suitable for small tooling applications.
This flat stock is appropriate for both job shop and production toolroom environments where dimensional accuracy is critical before and after hardening. The ground and tolerance-controlled surfaces support direct use in close-tolerance fixture work or as raw material for custom tooling. The 18-inch length provides enough stock for multiple small blanks or a single medium-length component. It is suited for applications demanding moderate toughness combined with good wear resistance, such as forming dies, cutting tools, and precision gages in light to medium-duty service.
Designed as a standard A2 air-hardening tool steel flat stock blank suitable for toolroom fabrication of punches, dies, blades, gauges, and similar precision components wherever AISI A2 material is specified.
Cutting, grinding, and machining should be performed in the annealed state before heat treatment. A2 tool steel requires air-hardening heat treat procedures performed by a qualified heat treater or toolroom technician familiar with AISI A2 specifications. Always use appropriate personal protective equipment when cutting or grinding tool steel stock. Follow applicable shop safety standards and material handling procedures for hardened and semi-hardened steel.
