The STARRETT 57509 is an A2 air-hardening tool steel flat stock bar used in tool and die making, jig and fixture fabrication, and precision machining applications. Measuring 0.125 inches thick, 7 inches wide, and 18 inches long, this flat stock is manufactured to tight tolerances: plus or minus 0.001 inches on thickness and squareness, plus 0.000 to 0.005 inches on width, and plus 0.250 inches on length. The A2 tool steel grade provides good dimensional stability during heat treatment and balanced hardness with moderate toughness. Machinists, toolmakers, and die makers work with this material in production and job-shop environments.
A2 air-hardening flat stock is suited for applications that require consistent cross-section dimensions and predictable heat-treat response. Typical uses include blanking dies, forming dies, punches, gauges, and precision tool components. The flat stock format allows parts to be laid out and cut directly from stock with minimal pre-machining. This size, at 7 inches wide and 18 inches long, accommodates medium-to-large tooling components without the need for additional width preparation.
Designed as a standard A2 tool steel flat stock suitable for use in tool and die, punch and die, gauge, and precision fixture fabrication where A2 air-hardening material is specified.
Cutting, grinding, and machining of tool steel flat stock should be performed by qualified toolmakers or machinists using appropriate coolant and tooling rated for hardened or pre-hardened steel. Heat treatment of A2 steel should follow the material specification guidelines for austenitizing temperature, quench method, and tempering cycle. Always use appropriate personal protective equipment when cutting or grinding tool steel. Consult applicable shop safety standards before processing.
