The STARRETT 57508 is an A2 air-hardening tool steel flat stock bar intended for toolmakers, machinists, and die makers who require a precision-ground blank ready for heat treatment and finishing. Measuring 0.125 inches thick, 1.75 inches wide, and 18 inches long, this flat stock is held to tight dimensional tolerances: plus or minus 0.001 inches on thickness, plus or minus 0.001 inches on squareness, plus 0.000 to 0.005 inches on width, and plus 0.250 inches on length. AISI A2 tool steel offers good dimensional stability during air-hardening, making it a reliable choice for punches, dies, gauges, and similar precision tooling applications.
This flat stock is suited for job shops, tool and die operations, and maintenance departments that fabricate or replace tooling in-house. The 18-inch length provides enough material for multiple smaller blanks or a single longer workpiece. It arrives in the annealed condition, ready for machining prior to heat treatment. Typical users include tool and die makers, moldmakers, and precision machinists working in metalworking or manufacturing environments.
Designed as a standard A2 tool steel flat stock blank suitable for fabricating punches, dies, blades, gauges, and general precision tooling components where air-hardening tool steel is specified.
Machining and heat treatment of A2 tool steel flat stock should be performed by qualified toolmakers or machinists familiar with tool steel processing. All grinding, milling, and EDM operations should be completed prior to hardening. Heat treatment should follow the material supplier guidelines for AISI A2, including proper soaking temperature and air-quench procedure. Personal protective equipment appropriate for hot-work operations is required during heat treatment.
