The STARRETT 57505 is an A2 air-hardening tool steel flat stock bar sized at 3/32 inch thick, 3 inches wide, and 18 inches long. A2 tool steel is a versatile, oil- and air-hardening grade known for its dimensional stability during heat treatment and good wear resistance after hardening. This flat stock is precision-ground to tight tolerances, making it suitable for toolmakers, machinists, and die makers who need reliable raw stock for fabricating punches, dies, jigs, fixtures, and other precision tooling components. At 1.44 pounds, it is a manageable single-piece bar for bench and machine work.
This flat stock is used in tool and die shops, maintenance and repair operations, and precision machining environments where consistent dimensions and predictable heat-treat response are required. It suits both small-shop fabricators and industrial toolroom applications. The 18-inch length provides enough material for a range of tooling blanks or can be cut to the sizes needed for individual components.
Designed as a general-purpose A2 tool steel flat stock blank compatible with standard toolroom fabrication processes including milling, grinding, EDM, and conventional heat-treating cycles appropriate for AISI A2 grade material.
Cutting, grinding, and machining of tool steel flat stock should be performed by qualified machinists or toolmakers using appropriate personal protective equipment. Follow established shop safety practices when sawing or grinding hardened or pre-hardened steel. Heat treatment of A2 tool steel should be performed according to the material grade specifications and conducted by personnel familiar with proper hardening, quenching, and tempering procedures for air-hardening tool steels. Consult material safety data sheets for handling guidance.
