The STARRETT 57489 is an A2 air-hardening tool steel flat stock bar used in toolmaking, die work, and precision machining applications. Dimensioned at 1/16 inch thick, 1/2 inch wide, and 18 inches long, this piece is ground and sized to tight tolerances: plus or minus 0.001 inches on thickness and squareness, plus 0.000 to 0.005 inches on width, and plus 0.250 inches on length. A2 tool steel offers excellent dimensional stability during heat treatment, making it a reliable choice for punches, dies, gauges, and similar toolroom components. This flat stock ships in a single piece and is ready for machining, grinding, or heat treating.
This flat stock is suited for toolroom, maintenance, and production environments where A2 air-hardening steel is specified. Common applications include fabrication of blanking dies, form punches, trim tools, and precision fixtures. The small cross-section makes it well-suited for thin blade or spacer applications. Machinists, tool and die makers, and maintenance technicians typically work with stock in this size range for both prototype and production tooling.
Designed as a standard AISI A2 air-hardening tool steel flat bar suitable for general toolroom and die-making applications requiring 1/16-inch by 1/2-inch cross-section stock.
Tool and die makers and machinists handle this material using standard milling, surface grinding, and EDM equipment. Heat treatment of A2 steel should be performed by qualified personnel following the steel manufacturer's recommended hardening and tempering cycle for A2 grade. Always de-burr cut edges before handling or fitting into assemblies. Follow applicable shop safety practices when grinding or machining tool steel.
