The STARRETT 57352 is an A2 air-hardening tool steel flat stock bar intended for toolmakers, machinists, and die makers who require tight dimensional tolerances and consistent material properties in a pre-cut stock form. Measuring 1 inch thick by 1-1/4 inches wide by 36 inches long, this flat stock is held to a thickness tolerance of plus or minus 0.001 inches and a width tolerance of plus 0.000 to 0.005 inches. The length tolerance is plus 0.25 inches. Edge squareness is held to 0.003 inches per inch across all edges. A2 tool steel offers good dimensional stability during air-hardening heat treatment, making it a common choice for punches, dies, and precision tooling components.
This flat stock is suited for fabrication of cutting tools, forming dies, gauges, and other toolroom applications where close tolerances and post-machining heat treatment are required. Heat treatment of A2 steel requires controlled atmosphere or salt bath equipment to achieve proper hardness; follow the material manufacturer's heat treatment guidelines for austenitizing temperature, quench method, and temper cycles. Allow material to reach ambient temperature before performing final grinding or lapping to finished dimensions.
