The STARRETT 57336 is an A2 air-hardening tool steel flat stock bar used in tool and die work, fixture building, punch and die fabrication, and precision machining applications. Measuring 0.25 inches thick by 0.5 inches wide by 36 inches long, this flat stock is ground to close tolerances and held to a thickness tolerance of plus or minus 0.001 inches and a width tolerance of plus 0.000 to 0.005 inches. The squareness of the edges is held to 0.003 inches per inch, making it suitable for applications where flatness and dimensional consistency are critical. It weighs 1.47 pounds per bar.
A2 air-hardening tool steel is a general-purpose cold-work tool steel widely used in low-to-medium production tooling. This flat bar is suited for machining into punches, dies, gauges, jigs, fixtures, and cutting tools. It is commonly used in machine shops, tool rooms, and fabrication shops where consistent stock dimensions reduce setup and grinding time. The 36-inch length provides usable stock for most standard tooling blanks without additional resawing.
Designed as a general-purpose A2 tool steel flat stock suitable for tool and die, punch and die, gauge, and fixture applications requiring an air-hardening cold-work tool steel material.
Machining and heat treatment of A2 tool steel should be performed by or under the supervision of a qualified toolmaker or machinist familiar with cold-work tool steel processing. Follow established shop practice for preheating, hardening, and tempering cycles per AISI A2 specifications — do not use water quench. Proper personal protective equipment including eye protection and heat-resistant gloves is required during any thermal processing. Consult applicable shop safety codes and material data sheets before machining or heat treating.
