The STARRETT 57315 is an A2 air-hardening tool steel flat stock bar used in toolmaking, die making, and precision machining applications. It measures 0.094 inches (3/32 inch) thick, 2 inches wide, and 36 inches long, and weighs approximately 2.2 pounds. A2 tool steel offers a good balance of toughness and wear resistance, and its air-hardening characteristic reduces distortion during heat treatment compared to oil- or water-hardening grades. Machinists, tool and die makers, and industrial supply professionals work with this material to fabricate punches, dies, forming tools, and fixtures.
This flat stock is suited for general toolroom use in both job shop and production environments. The annealed condition allows machining before hardening. Its dimensional tolerances make it appropriate for precision tool fabrication where close stock allowances are required before final grinding. The 36-inch bar length is a standard cut suitable for most bench and CNC machining setups.
Designed as a standard A2 air-hardening tool steel flat bar suitable for toolroom fabrication of punches, dies, fixtures, and forming tools where air-hardening grades are specified.
Cutting and machining of tool steel flat stock should be performed by qualified machinists using appropriate cutting fluids and tooling rated for hardened or semi-hardened steel. Heat treatment should follow AISI A2 guidelines for austenitizing temperature and air-quench procedures. Proper personal protective equipment is required when sawing, grinding, or heat-treating tool steel. Consult material safety and heat-treat data from the manufacturer before processing.
