The STARRETT 57309 is an A2 air-hardening tool steel flat stock bar used in toolmaking, die making, and precision machining applications. Measuring 0.0625 inches thick, 4 inches wide, and 36 inches long, this flat stock is manufactured to tight dimensional tolerances: plus or minus 0.001 inches on thickness, plus 0.000 to 0.005 inches on width, and plus 0.25 inches on length. Squareness is held to 0.003 inches per inch on all edges. A2 tool steel offers excellent wear resistance and dimensional stability during heat treatment, making it a preferred choice for punches, dies, and gauges.
This flat stock is suited for tool and die shops, machine shops, and maintenance operations requiring precision-ground stock ready for layout, machining, and subsequent heat treatment. The air-hardening characteristic of A2 tool steel reduces distortion during hardening compared to oil-hardening grades, which is a key advantage when working with thin or wide cross-sections like this 0.0625-inch by 4-inch profile. It is appropriate for both short-run prototype tooling and production die components.
Designed as a standard A2 air-hardening tool steel flat stock suitable for general toolmaking, die making, and precision machining applications requiring AISI A2 material specification.
Machining and grinding should be performed before heat treatment. A2 tool steel is typically hardened by licensed tool and die makers or heat treat shops following established AISI A2 hardening procedures. Always use appropriate personal protective equipment when cutting or grinding tool steel. Secure the workpiece properly before any sawing, milling, or surface grinding operations.
