The STARRETT 57248 is a low carbon steel flat stock bar cut to 24 inches long by 12 inches wide and 3/16 inch thick. It is made from AISI Type C1018 steel, a mild steel grade known for consistent machinability, weldability, and moderate strength. This flat bar is produced to tight dimensional tolerances, making it suitable for precision layout work, fabrication, and general metalworking applications. Machinists, fabricators, and tool-and-die shops rely on this type of stock for fixtures, brackets, plates, and weldments where close dimensional control is required.
This flat stock is appropriate for both light industrial and shop environments where low carbon steel is the specified material. Common applications include fixture plates, spacers, backing plates, and structural weldments in fabrication shops, maintenance departments, and manufacturing facilities. The 12 by 24 inch footprint provides a workable blank size for parts that can be cut, drilled, milled, or welded to finished dimensions. Length tolerance is held to plus 0.625 inch, width tolerance to plus 0.000 to 0.015 inch, and thickness and squareness tolerance to plus or minus 0.001 inch.
Designed as a general-purpose low carbon steel flat bar suitable for fabrication, machining, and welding applications requiring AISI C1018 material specification.
Handling and cutting of steel flat stock should be performed by qualified machinists or fabricators using appropriate personal protective equipment including gloves and eye protection. Cut edges will be sharp and may require deburring before use in assemblies. Welding operations on C1018 steel should follow applicable AWS standards and shop procedures. Store flat bar stock horizontally on a flat surface to prevent warping or distortion.
