The STARRETT 57246 is an A2 air-hardening tool steel flat stock bar used in toolmaking, die work, and precision machining applications. Measuring 0.125 inches thick, 0.75 inches wide, and 36 inches long, it is supplied in an annealed condition ready for machining before heat treatment. A2 tool steel offers good dimensional stability during air hardening and resists deformation better than oil-hardening grades, making it a common choice for punches, dies, gauges, and forming tools. Thickness tolerance is plus or minus 0.001 inches and width tolerance is plus 0.000 to 0.005 inches, supporting precise tool fabrication without additional stock removal.
This flat stock is suited for job shops, tool and die facilities, and maintenance departments that machine custom tooling in-house. It is appropriate for fabricating blanking dies, trim dies, thread gauges, and similar precision components where controlled distortion during hardening is critical. At 36 inches in length it can be cut to individual tool blanks as required. The 0.125 inches by 0.75 inches cross-section is a standard blank size that fits a wide range of small punch and die applications.
Designed as a standard A2 tool steel flat stock blank for use in toolmaking, die making, and precision machining applications requiring air-hardening material per AISI A2 specification.
Machining and heat treatment of A2 tool steel should be performed by qualified tool and die makers or machinists familiar with AISI A2 procedures. Hardening involves austenitizing and air quenching; follow the material supplier's published heat treatment guidelines for temperature and soak time. Use appropriate personal protective equipment when cutting, grinding, or heat treating this material. Consult applicable shop safety codes before beginning any heat treatment operation.
