The STARRETT 57230 is an O1 oil-hardening tool steel flat stock bar designed for toolmakers, machinists, and die makers who require tight-tolerance raw stock for fabricating punches, dies, jigs, and cutting tools. Ground and held to close dimensional tolerances, this flat stock measures 3/16 inches thick, 1/4 inches wide, and 18 inches long, with a thickness tolerance of plus or minus 0.001 inches. The AISI Type O1 alloy is well-suited for applications requiring good wear resistance and ease of hardening in an oil quench. It ships in single-piece quantity, making it practical for low-volume toolroom use.
This flat stock is used in precision toolmaking environments including tool and die shops, maintenance departments, and machine shops. Typical applications include blanks for small punches, form tools, scribers, and custom cutting edges. The 18-inch length provides enough material for multiple tool blanks from a single piece. Its ground surfaces reduce setup time and allow direct use as a reference edge or tool blank without extensive pre-machining.
Designed as a standard AISI Type O1 oil-hardening tool steel flat stock suitable for general toolroom fabrication wherever O1 ground flat stock in 3/16 x 1/4 inch cross-section is specified.
Cutting and grinding of tool steel flat stock should be performed by a qualified machinist using appropriate metalworking equipment. When heat treating, follow established oil-quench procedures for AISI O1 tool steel and use proper personal protective equipment. Grinding operations generate fine metallic dust — use adequate ventilation and respiratory protection. Final hardening and tempering should be performed before finish grinding to final dimensions.
