The STARRETT 57222 is an A2 air-hardening tool steel flat stock bar measuring 1 inch thick, 3 inches wide, and 18 inches long. A2 tool steel is an oil- or air-hardening cold-work alloy known for its dimensional stability during heat treatment and its balance of wear resistance and toughness. This flat stock is supplied in an annealed condition ready for machining, then hardened to final application requirements. It is used by tool-and-die makers, machinists, and metalworking shops that need close-tolerance raw material for fabricating dies, punches, gauges, and cutting tools.
This flat stock is suited for job shops, toolrooms, and maintenance departments working in both light industrial and heavy manufacturing environments. Typical applications include blanking dies, forming tools, shear blades, and precision gauging fixtures where dimensional stability after hardening is critical. The bar ships as a single 18-inch length and is intended for cut-to-length or direct-use machining operations.
Designed as a general-purpose A2 tool steel flat stock for machining into dies, punches, gauges, and other precision tooling components where air-hardening cold-work steel is specified.
Cutting, grinding, and machining of tool steel flat stock should be performed by qualified machinists using appropriate metalworking equipment. Follow established heat-treatment procedures for A2 tool steel, including proper preheat, hardening, and tempering cycles per the material specification. Always wear appropriate PPE when cutting or grinding tool steel. Consult the material data sheet for recommended hardening temperatures and quench media specific to A2 alloy.
