The STARRETT 57219 is an A2 air-hardening tool steel flat stock bar measuring 1 inch thick by 1 inch wide by 18 inches long. A2 tool steel is a versatile cold-work die steel known for its good dimensional stability during air hardening, moderate toughness, and excellent wear resistance. This flat stock is supplied in the annealed condition and is intended for machining into punches, dies, gauges, knives, and other precision tooling components. Machinists, tool-and-die makers, and skilled fabricators work with this material when close-tolerance blanks are required before heat treatment.
This flat stock is suited for job shops, tool rooms, and maintenance departments that produce custom tooling in small quantities. The 18-inch length provides enough material for most single-piece tooling applications without requiring a full bar order. The controlled tolerances make it appropriate for applications where near-net-shape blanks reduce post-machining time before hardening.
Designed as a general-purpose A2 tool steel flat blank compatible with standard cold-work tooling applications including die making, punch fabrication, and gauge construction where air-hardening steel is specified.
A2 tool steel flat stock is worked by qualified machinists and tool-and-die makers using conventional milling, grinding, and EDM equipment. Material should be annealed prior to machining if received in a hardened state; verify hardness with a calibrated hardness tester before machining. Heat treatment must be performed by qualified personnel following the material supplier guidelines for A2 steel austenitizing and air-quench procedures. Always allow the finished part to reach ambient temperature and inspect for dimensional compliance before placing into service.
