The STARRETT 57215 is an A2 air-hardening tool steel flat stock bar intended for toolmakers, die makers, and machinist trades requiring a reliable pre-cut blank for fabricating punches, dies, gauges, and similar precision tooling components. It measures 0.75 inches thick by 1.5 inches wide by 18 inches long and weighs 5.74 pounds. A2 tool steel offers good dimensional stability during heat treatment and moderate wear resistance, making it a common choice when distortion control during hardening is a priority. Thickness, width, and squareness tolerances are held to +0.010 to 0.015 inches, with a length tolerance of +0.25 inches, providing consistent oversize stock for finish grinding to final dimension.
This flat stock is suited for tool and die shops, mold shops, and maintenance machining operations in industrial and manufacturing environments. The 18-inch length provides a workable blank for a single tooling component or can be sectioned into multiple shorter pieces. A2 material is commonly selected for applications requiring better toughness than D2 and lower distortion than oil-hardening grades, particularly in cold-work tooling. Licensed machinists, tool and die makers, and industrial maintenance technicians are the typical end users for this product.
Designed as a general-purpose A2 tool steel flat stock blank suitable for cold-work tooling fabrication including punches, dies, and gauges where air-hardening grades are specified.
Cutting and grinding of tool steel flat stock should be performed by qualified machinists using appropriate coolant to prevent surface tempering. Heat treatment of A2 tool steel should follow the material specification and be performed by a qualified heat treater familiar with air-hardening grades. Always wear appropriate PPE including eye protection and gloves when cutting or grinding. Follow applicable shop safety standards when handling and storing tool steel stock.
