The STARRETT 57210 is an A2 air-hardening tool steel flat stock bar intended for toolmakers, die makers, machinists, and metalworking professionals who need precision-ground stock ready for heat treatment. Measuring 0.625 inches thick, 2.5 inches wide, and 18 inches long, this flat stock is held to tight dimensional tolerances throughout: +0.010 to 0.015 inches on thickness, width, and squareness, and +0.25 inches on length. A2 tool steel is an air-hardening, cold-work die steel known for its dimensional stability during heat treat, moderate toughness, and good wear resistance. It machines well in the annealed condition and responds predictably to air quench hardening.
This flat stock is suited for fabricating punches, dies, forming tools, gauges, and similar precision tooling components in machine shops, tool-and-die operations, and maintenance departments. The 18-inch length provides adequate stock for most single-piece tooling applications, and the 2.5-inch width accommodates a range of die and punch geometries without excessive material removal. It arrives in the annealed condition, ready for machining prior to heat treatment.
Designed as a standard A2 air-hardening tool steel flat stock suitable for cold-work tooling applications including punches, dies, forming tools, and gauges where tight dimensional tolerances and predictable heat-treat response are required.
Machining and heat treatment of A2 tool steel should be performed by qualified toolmakers or machinists familiar with cold-work die steel practices. Follow the material supplier and applicable shop safety guidelines for grinding, milling, and EDM operations on tool steel. Heat treatment including hardening and tempering should be performed in a controlled atmosphere or vacuum furnace to minimize decarburization; follow AISI A2 heat treat specifications for target hardness. Allow stock to fully cool and stress-relieve as appropriate before finish grinding to final dimension.
