The STARRETT 57200 is an A2 air-hardening tool steel flat stock bar used in toolmaking, die making, and precision machining applications. It measures 0.5 inches thick, 3 inches wide, and 18 inches long, providing a ready-to-machine blank for punches, dies, gauges, and other tooling components. A2 tool steel offers good wear resistance and dimensional stability through the air-hardening process, making it a reliable choice where consistent hardness and minimal distortion are required. This flat stock is supplied with tight manufacturing tolerances and is handled by toolmakers, machinists, and tool and die technicians working in production or job shop environments.
This flat stock is suited for fabricating cutting tools, forming dies, jigs, fixtures, and precision wear components in both light production and one-off toolroom work. The 18-inch length provides sufficient stock for multiple small tool blanks or a single longer component without requiring further saw reduction in many cases. A2 material is widely specified where a balance of toughness and wear resistance is needed and where the air-hardening process reduces the risk of quench cracking compared to oil or water-hardening grades.
Designed as a standard AISI A2 air-hardening tool steel flat stock suitable for use with conventional toolroom machining equipment and compatible with heat-treating processes specified for A2 grade tool steel.
A2 tool steel flat stock is processed by qualified machinists and tool and die makers using standard milling, grinding, and EDM equipment. Always anneal or verify material condition before machining if hardness is unknown. Follow the material manufacturer's recommended heat-treating cycle for A2 grade when hardening and tempering. Use appropriate personal protective equipment when cutting or grinding tool steel stock.
