The STARRETT 57186 is an A2 air-hardening tool steel flat stock bar used in toolmaking, die making, and precision machining applications. Measuring 0.375 inches thick, 1.25 inches wide, and 18 inches long, this flat stock ships in an annealed, pre-hardened condition ready for machining before final heat treatment. A2 tool steel offers good dimensional stability during air-hardening and is a common choice where moderate toughness and wear resistance are required in the same part. Machinists, tool and die makers, and industrial maintenance technicians work with this material when building punches, dies, gauges, and general tooling components.
This flat stock is suited for job shop, production tooling, and maintenance repair environments where a standard A2 bar in a manageable 18-inch length is needed. The material is supplied to tight dimensional tolerances, making it appropriate for direct use in precision tool fabrication without extensive additional stock removal. It is appropriate for both small shops and larger toolrooms requiring consistent, traceable material specification.
Designed as a standard A2 tool steel flat bar for use in toolmaking, die making, punch fabrication, and general precision machining applications requiring AISI A2 air-hardening material specification.
Machining and heat treatment of A2 tool steel should be performed by qualified tool and die makers or machinists familiar with hardening and tempering procedures for air-hardening tool steels. Machine in the annealed condition before hardening. Follow the material supplier and applicable shop safety guidelines when performing heat treatment operations, including proper PPE for high-temperature work.
